Customers should focus on more protection
Customers should focus on taking GAP insurance products as the residual values - particularly on big 4x4s - threaten to fall through the floor, according to AA Warranty.
Simon Tennyson, managing director of AA Warranty said dealers should encourage customers to protect the invoice price of their vehicle rather than settle for the value at the time of a claim in the event of a write-off.
“Customers need to be looking at GAP, said Tennyson.
“4x4s haven taken a hammering. Residual values are dropping across the board but especially for 4x4s.
“Now’s the time to get this right, customers need more protection,” he added.
Tennyson also believes that dealers could expect to sell more warranties in the current economic climate with both new and used sales coming under pressure and customers keen to avoid any unexpected financial outlays that could result from lack of cover.
“If the product is explained correctly, dealers should be able to sell more warranties now.”
Jaguar XF named ‘Car of The Year’
The much-vaunted Jaguar XF has collected yet another major industry honour, this time being voted Auto Express ‘Car of The Year’.
The multi-award winning sports saloon - which ranges in price from £35,000 to £50,000 - claimed its crown following victory in the 'Best Executive Car' category ahead of the BMW 5-Series, the Mercedes CLS and E-Class, the Audi A6 and the Lexus GS.
It represents its fourth top title win since being launched in March 2008, already making it one of the biggest success stories in the Castle Bromwich-based company’s illustrious history.
Dan Strong, Editor of Auto Express magazine, said: "Jaguar’s XF is a machine that has proved the doubters wrong. It's a car that impresses on every level, from design to drivability, practicality to price.”
The man behind the XF, Jaguar’s design director Ian Callum said: “Jaguar is very, very proud to receive this wonderful award. It is the proof that Jaguar is back And the XF is just the beginning of our new story for the future. Just wait until you...
Car finance booms as other lenders shun borrowers
The number of consumers taking out car loans from vehicle dealerships has risen sharply over the past 12 months due to the “credit crunch”, as traditional high street
lenders continue to raise both their interest rates and their rejection rates!
The news comes as Volkswagen said last weekend that it had hit its 2008 target of £1bn worth of car loans five months ahead of schedule – in spite of an overall slump in car sales in the UK.
While car finance has historically been viewed as expensive compared with personal loans available in the wider market, most high street lenders have been significantly increasing their interest rates over the past year. According to Moneysupermarket.com, the comparison website, the average of the top five cheapest personal loans is currently 7.7 per cent, compared with 6.5 per cent this time last year. Furthermore, lenders are rejecting many more loan applications this year, accepting only those with the very best credit ratings.

Rooney signs for Mercedes!
Man United striker Wayne Rooney has signed a lucrative £1 million contract to be an ambassador for Mercedes.
As part of the two year deal, the 22-year-old will have to drive a Mercedes to all matches and most training sessions – leaving wife Coleen to drive the rest of his fleet of luxury cars.
England international Rooney has already taken delivery of a customised Mercedes CL 63 AMG worth more than £120,000 for his troubles.
The Man United star will also be allowed to drive the rest of the company’s models including the C63 AMG and CLS as well as having a chauffeur-driven Merc for public events.
For a brand that prides itself on its exclusive, upmarket image, Rooney is perhaps not the obvious choice for a new public ‘face’.
Indeed, some marketing experts have already questioned the new signing, suggesting the firm could lose out from ‘chavving down’, with brand analyst Peter York called it ‘extremely strange’.
He said: ‘Ordinarily you’d expect Mercedes to choose someone aspirational and classy to advertise...
VW tops European sales figures
The latest Year To Date sales figures have revealed that Volkswagen continues to lead the way in Europe.
The figures released by London-based analysts Jato Dynamics, confirmed that VW - aided by strong sales of the flagship Golf model - retained its position as the continent’s top selling brand in both July and YTD (Year To Date) ahead of nearest challenger Ford with Vauxhall, Renault and Peugeot completing the top five.
Overall, European sales of new vehicles were down 2.5% (243,447 units) compared to the same period in 2007, but Nissan (23.5% increase) and Mazda (9.2% increase) in particular have managed to buck the trend.
July was the fourth consecutive month that the VW Golf has led the European market, with the Peugeot 207, Ford Focus, Vauxhall Corsa and the Vauxhall Astra heading the chasing group.
Significantly, July saw the Audi A4 brake into the European top 10 for the first time as it full range of new models, including the Avant, finally became available. The A4 sold 27,767 units in July...
